Framing Recommendations

My paintings are known for their texture and movement in response to light.  When framing, it is my recommendation to not stretch the work and if needed only use a museum glass front.   What has worked well with my clients is either a floating frame, or, basic framing, with or without matting.

Stretching:  The impact of stretching the painting is not guaranteed.  There are two concerns:

  1. Stretching will flatten the painting, removing the ripples and texture which are instrumental in the piece’s movement in response to light; and

  2. As this is a watercolor painting that is extremely sensitive to water, any introduction to any liquid will cause damage.

Museum Glass Front:   There are pros & cons to consider when deciding to place a glass front.

  • In general, a glass front will provide more protection from dust and dirt. Unlike oil paintings, watercolor paintings will be damaged by any liquid introduction. Also, since the paintings are done on paper, not canvas, there is concern with possible yellowing of the paper, especially if one wants to preserve the white border many of my paintings provide.

  • A regular glass front results in too much glare and reflection, thus removing or diminishing, the piece’s movement in response to light. Many feel a non-glare glass is an alternative, but this will unfortunately mute the painting all together.

  • While more costly, museum glass provides both the protection glass offers while preserving the texture and movement in response to light. It is worth the investment.

  • Having no glass front of course is an option, however, as mentioned above, it does pose risk. Without a glass front, the painting’s texture and response to light will be preserved but the risk of exposure to damage and potentially yellowing will increase. Keep in mind, without a glass front, a floating frame is not an option.

Artist Signature

I sign and date all my paintings in the back.  The reason for this is that my paintings are undefined - where the top, bottom and sides are determined by the viewer.  However, should one know how they would like the painting to be hung, I can sign it for them again in the front if desired.
